An interview with Amanda Shin

Amanda Shin is an embroidery artist based in Los Angeles. After a decade in architecture, she embraced embroidery as a new creative outlet, often drawing inspiration from her architectural background to inform her intricate designs.

1.What do you dream about? 

   -floating in soup 

2.How did you first get into embroidery?

   -I wanted a low overhead hobby that didn’t involve screens or machines.

3.What do you enjoy most about embroidery?

   -Adding small details to make a simple design into a story

4.Name one of your favorite embroidery pieces and explain why it’s your favorite.

   -My favorite piece is a Koreatown wall-hanging depicting a strip mall sign. it’s a love letter to my favorite neighborhood in LA. 

5.What’s your favorite thread or color to work with?

   -Bright orange

6.What excites you the most right now?

   -quality time with friends

7.What does the snake symbolize to you?

   -Mystery and insight

8.What’s on your playlist while you’re embroidering?

   -DJ-Kicks, Time Crisis Radio

9.If you could embroider anything without limitations, what would it be?

   -Something microscopic
